The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site has preserved some of the buildings, objects and places that were significant in this major, treacherous train passage over the Allegheny Mountains. At the park, guests can see parts of the railroad as they climb steep inclines up through the mountains, visit historic places like the Lemon House tavern, see model trains and landscapes and more. It's even possible to travel to and see the 900-foot-long tunnel that was carved through the mountains, one of the most ambitious projects of its day. The park begins just south of Gallitzin and runs for about eight miles southeast until it terminates near Duncansville.
Open daily, year round. Hours vary, call for details.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Adults $4; Children 15 and under are free.
